“PCTEL, Inc. (Nasdaq: PCTI), a leading provider of personal
connectivity and Internet access technology, announced today that
its software-based Linux-compatible modem solution has been
selected for The New Internet Computer Company’s first low-cost
Internet appliance. Available in its Limited Edition release, the
$199 NIC links the Linux 2.2 operating system with PCTEL’s 56K
HSP56 MicroModem(TM), allowing consumers to connect to the Internet
at an ultra-affordable price.”

“PCTEL introduced the industry’s first software-based
Linux-compatible modem
to respond to manufacturers’ growing
interest in producing affordable Internet connectivity products,”
noted Peter Chen, chief executive officer of PCTEL. “Our patented
HSP technology allows us to deliver a cost-effective modem solution
that manufacturers such as NIC can then couple with the flexibility
and robustness of the Linux operating system. The end result is
that consumers are the beneficiaries of a new breed of reliable and
inexpensive Internet appliances.”

“A spinoff of Oracle with Oracle chairman Larry Ellison as its
primary investor, the New Internet Computer Company’s goal is to
popularize affordable access to the Internet and e-mail through a
speedy and reliable Internet computer.”
