“VMware, Inc. today announced the production release of its
desktop products, VMware 2.0 for Linux and VMware 2.0 for Windows
NT and Windows 2000. The release of these products follows a
successful 45-day public beta period, in which over 45,000 people
downloaded the beta versions from the VMware Web site with very few
reported incidents. Both products are now available from the Web
site at http://www.vmware.com.”

“VMware’s desktop software, the first incarnation of VMware’s
virtual machine technology, allows users to run multiple operating
systems simultaneously on a single PC. This means that users can
run all the applications they need, regardless of operating system.
These applications and operating systems run in VMware virtual
machines, allowing users to toggle between applications and
operating systems instantly.”

“VMware 2.0 introduces many new features and enhancements,
including a suspend to disk and Instant Restore function, major
performance enhancements, support for SCSI disks and CD-ROM
devices, and automatic Samba file sharing for Windows on
Linux.”
