Red Herring: Make Java free. Unconditionally.

“Sun’s new policy isn’t enough. Unlike a truly open language
like C++, Sun will still own Java. Java licensees will still be

although developers will be able to modify Java’s source code,
their products must pass Sun’s Java compatibility test before they
can be shipped. Java will still be what Sun says Java is.”

“Sun’s CEO, Scott McNealy, should heed the open letter that our
editor wrote to him in December 1997 and make Java really
free.”
