Reuters: Oracle to Back IBM-Led Unix Standardization Effort

“International Business Machines Corp. and Oracle Corp., usually
fierce rivals, on Friday said they would collaborate on an IBM- led
effort to standardize the Unix operating system.”

“The two companies said they would work together to unify IBM’s
version of the Unix operating system with Monterey/64, a project
backed by IBM, Unix software maker Santa Cruz Operation Inc. and
chipmaker Intel Corp. to make a mass-market version of
Unix….”

In the face of growing competition from Microsoft, Unix
backers, which include some of the world’s largest makers of
computer systems, have banded together to unify the fragmented
operating system, which traditionally comes in a variety of flavors
that run mainly on only one company’s systems.
