Reuters: Sun offers workstation for sub-$2,000 PC market

“Sun Microsystems Inc…on Tuesday said it has cut the price on
its Ultra 5 Unix-based workstation to under $2,000, putting the
machines within range of personal computer prices…”

“The machine is designed to appeal to software developers rather
than the mainstream business or home computer markets.”

The Ultra 5 runs six software operating systems in one
workstation: Sun’s own Solaris, Java, which it pioneered, Microsoft
Corp.’s Windows NT, Windows 95, DOS and open-source
Linux.
