Seattle Times: States want Microsoft to auction off Windows coding

“To blunt Microsoft’s alleged anticompetitive behavior, the
Redmond software corporation should be forced to auction off one of
its most valuable possessions: the secret blueprints for the
Windows operating system, antitrust prosecutors from 19 states have
determined.”

“The far-reaching proposal is among the remedies 19 states are
suggesting should Microsoft lose the historic antitrust lawsuit
brought by U.S. Department of Justice and the states.”

“After the Windows auction, the intellectual property rights
would be transferred to possibly two or three companies. Microsoft
would be permitted to market and further develop its own version of
Windows…”

“Other options under consideration include forcing Microsoft to
make its source code public…”
