“WinLinux 2000 is an interesting product. The idea behind it is
good: Install a Linux OS using your existing DOS partition and use
a Windows installation and configuration program to do it, reading
system information about your hardware that Windows has already
been able to gather to help take the guesswork out of things.”
“The installation of the Linux system itself is fairly straight
forward. It followed the usual Windows installation wizard style.
The only question I would have about it is, if it has to be
installed in a directory called Linux then why not simply ask for
the drive to be installed to? Instead, I have to enter a drive and
path… but am informed the path will be ignored anyway. It could
be confusing for some people, but life will go on.”
“Where it starts to falter is in the configuration stage. While
it is supposed to gather information about your machine’s settings
from Windows, it was unable to detect my video, network, or sound
card on it’s own. The sound card I expected since it has not had a
history of working in Linux (thought it would have been nice had it
known something I haven’t managed to figure out yet). However, my
ATI Mach64-based video card and D-Link network adapter are known to
work so I was a little disapointed with that. It did discover my
PS/2 mouse, keyboard, and time zone correctly, though.”
