“AT&T researchers announced Friday a software invention they
say will allow more uncensored speech on the Internet by dispersing
encrypted files across the network and making their authors
untraceable.”
“Publius, named for the pen name Alexander Hamilton, John
Jay and James Madison used to anonymously publish the Federalist
papers, is designed to divide computer files into various pieces
and hide them on participating Web sites on the Internet.“
“They had to hide behind the name Publius for fear of
retaliation by the British government,” said Michael Dickman, a
spokesman for AT&T Labs in Florham Park. “That need continues
to this day, where oppressive governments will retaliate against
people that are in the minority and have dissenting views.”
“People who want to publish and read material they fear could
face censure will be able to download software off the Publius Web
site once a trial period begins in late July, Dickman said.”
