“Microsoft: `Open source’ for some Windows code is even on the
table.”
“Microsoft Corp. President Steve Ballmer said Wednesday that the
Redmond-based software giant would take whatever steps necessary to
stay competitive with the increasingly popular Linux operating
system, and would even consider adopting an “open source” model
for some of its Windows code.”
“Although far from a threat now, Ballmer’s comments about Linux
show that Microsoft is keeping an eye on the growing support for
the open source system. And if Microsoft ultimately follows through
by making even portions of the Windows software code available to
anyone, it would represent a dramatic departure for a company that
has always zealously guarded access to its intellectual
property.”
