“What was Microsoft thinking? C#, pronounced C sharp, is
Microsoft’s newest programming language. Does the world really
need another programming language? I don’t think so! And, more to
the point, neither do any of the programmers, I spoke to at PC
Expo.”
“If you want product speed, you program in C or C++. If you want
fast development, you use a rapid application development package
like Inprise’s Delphi. If you want database access, you learn SQL.
If you want a language that anyone with any coding genes at all in
their body can use, you write in Perl or Python. If you want to
make a serious stab at portability, you use Java. And C#? Uh
…well, let me think now, uh.”
“Microsoft claims with a straight face that C# isn’t just yet
another attempt to derail Java. If you believe that, I have a nice
bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. … I’ve seen the specs and I’ve
heard Microsoft’s Andrew Layman, software architect with the
Distributed Applications Platform Division, say that it’s does
everything Java does, but it’s not Java. Guys, if it looks like
Java, quacks like Java, it’s–at most–a spin-off of the Java
idea.”
