The download page for Sun’s StarOffice 6 Beta is now available,
though the site is consistently reporting high volume demand and
failing to provide the files for download.

Sun’s product
site
provides a limited overview of some of the new features to
be found in this release.

SolarisGuide has the story:

Attempting to counter Microsoft Office’s dominance on
the desktop, Sun Microsystems will release on Tuesday a beta
version of StarOffice 6.0 office-productivity software for
download.

StarOffice is a combination word processor, spreadsheet manager,
HTML editor, and Web/mail browser. Running under Linux, Solaris,
and Windows, StarOffice is part of Sun’s strategy to wean users
from Microsoft. That strategy has proven to pique the curiosity of
users across the board, as previous versions of StarOffice has been
downloaded by more than six million users.

“In the face of decreasing IT budgets, StarOffice 6.0 provides
users a high quality, low-cost choice for office productivity
software,” said Tony Siress, Sun’s director of marketing and
business development, Webtop Applications and Software Group, in a
press release. “We’ve developed the new features, interoperability
and compatibility enhancements based on feedback from our existing
users and the open-source developer community via
OpenOffice.org.”
