SRO: Sun Answers Its StarOffice Critics

“Sun Microsystems and GartnerGroup are at odds over consulting
statements attributed to Gartner that slam Sun’s StarOffice.
Despite alleged compatibility issues, Sun says it expects to
give away millions of copies of the suite over the next few months
and claims to have signed two major PC OEMs to bundle it, although
Sun will not name them.

“In addition, Sun CEO Scott McNealy says AT&T, @Home and
America Online all will offer StarPortal, the Web-based version of
StarOffice due in “early access” by the end of the year. A button
on the portal will allow customers to synchronize their data and
work off-line. StarPortal initially will support browsers, cell
phones, PalmPilots and set-top boxes.”

“Meanwhile, StarDivision founder and Sun VP Marco Boerries
denies that Microsoft has lured away four StarOffice developers.
Earlier this month, a source alleged that GartnerGroup was bearish
on StarOffice because of developer departures and incompatibility
issues.”
