Sun to Reveal Cobalt Strategy Tomorrow, Answer Linux Strategy Questions

By Brian
Proffitt

Last September, Sun Microsystems was poised to replace Linux on
Sun’s soon-to-be-acquired Cobalt Server appliances with its own
Solaris operating system. But some preliminary information coming
out before a press conference scheduled for tomorrow is revealing
that Linux is not out of the Cobalt picture yet.

Tomorrow’s press conference is a vehicle to announce the launch
of Sun’s latest server appliances, which will include a Linux-based
Raq server. This runs counter to statements made by Sun and its
internal Solaris group late last year, which clearly indicated
Sun’s desire to shift to the Solaris OS on the Cobalt servers.

No reason has been given for this change of heart, but early
reports have cited developer’s unwillingness to use Solaris, citing
it as a potential roadblock to creating application-specific
servers.
