Subject: Dr. Dobb’s Tcl-URL! – weekly Tcl news and links (Jun
13)
In a serious coup for open source software support, Alain Zuur
asked about getting beautiful document graphics from the BLT graph
widget. Some discussion ensued, including bitmap resolutions and
postscript conversion. But within just a few days, George A.
Howlett reported that he had enhanced the BLT package to generate
Windows Metafiles for inclusion into “that platform’s” word
processors.

Todd M. Helfter announced a Oratcl 2.7, which has significant
performance benefits from a Tcl_Obj implementation. Oratcl 2.7 is
available from the Ajuba CVS repository.

Richard Suchenwirth’s succinct response about loading character
sets highlights the power of Tcl for international application
development.

George Peter Staplin asks about mixing Xlib drawing with Tk
widgets. He gets some good advice, and even threatens to write the
book.

Eric Melski’s announcement of Tcl/Tk 8.4a1 http://x76.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=631956987
spawns several discussions including Jeff Hobbs’ “Itcl in the core”
http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=632804847
thread and a discussion about new widgets in the core http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=632514818
The discussion heated up a bit between the Ajuba “core team” and
“the community” http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=632804847
http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=632861955
This evolved into “The Future of Tcl”, thanks to a thoughtful
vector from Matt Newman http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=633241136
and a “Community participation in Tcl development” thread started
by Paul Duffin
http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=633001852
Speaking of Itcl, “[Incr Tcl] in the core” had several of its
own discussions, including a FAQ posted by Mark Harrison (for which
I cannot find a deja reference) and a discussion of “Itcl
Improvements”
http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=631697230
In a flame-free thread titled “Tcl vs Python” http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=632163524
Paul Duffin posted a description of “The Tcl Way” http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=633053837
and A.M. Kuchling posted “The Python Way” http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=633504433
