Subject: Dr. Dobb’s Tcl-URL! – weekly Tcl news and links (Jun
19)

Big news is the Tcl 8.4 roadmap, presented by the Ajuba core
team [TCT]
http://dev.scriptics.com/software/tcltk/8.4.roadmap.html

Take a look at the planned features, and consider volunteering.
There’s a lot of good stuff going on. See the discussion

One branch thread on localization included several volunteers to
add new languages to the message catalog

For a fascinating update on the uses of Itcl/Tk in the
development of the Mars Pathfinder flight code, see this posting
from one of the Pathfinder project’s engineers
http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=634056756

Follow the whole thread to see more on testing, provably correct
code, and design by contract.

Although officially announced last week, Don Porter’s drop-in
replacement for the package utility has been discussed. In
particular, Don responded to a request for specific details of the
advantages of his new package scheme.

On compiling Tcl on the Mac … Nobody had gotten around to
building 8.3.1, which is much more stable than 8.3.0. Jim Ingham
and Donal Fellows are consipiring to describe the process

Oh, and look for new binaries real soon now too.

Does anybody know how the byte code compiler really works? After
some group rumination, Brian Lewis piped up with a post in which he
states that he does, in fact, remember how things work, and also
posted a pointer to a paper which gives an overview of the
compiler

Which VC++ should I buy? Opinions abound, with a lot of hints
for using the free cygwin compiler on Windows, or even cross
compiling from Linux.

Paul Duffin reiterates, with only moderate shouting, the
simplicity of Tcl’s Stubs mechanism and its benefit of CROSS
PLATFORM CONSISTENCY. For a little more complete description,
see
http://deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=636307009

The First European Tcl/Tk Users Meeting is over, and as
promised, the papers are available

Quote of the Week is a dead-on tie: Paul Duffin: Sexy things are
just too distracting for me to do my job properly and trendy things
always cost too much and have to be changed too often 😉

Mo DeJong: Java is a great language, but don’t every try to
write a GUI in Java.
