“The kickoff party for Linux Expo 99, hosted by Red Hat
software, was held Wednesday, May 18 in a factory-sized bar called
Jillian’s. The beer was free.

“Linux and open source software advocates have moaned for years
about their lack of mainstream acceptance. Now they’ve gotten it,
but things aren’t turning out the way they’d hoped.”

“… hardly anyone from the press bothered to visit the small
cluster of non-profit Linux groups relegated to the back of the
hall that were collectively dismissed by one suit-wearing Expo
attendee as “the ponytail crowd.””

“The Debian booth didn’t even have chairs; everyone sat
cross-legged on the floor.”

“… like it or not, all the action at this year’s Linux Expo
was in the commercial sector.”
