stealth-marketing phenomena in the history of software.”

“On March 1, the start-up will begin offering support services
for companies that use Linux, a popular open source version of
Unix. The company will take advantage of an installed user base for
Linux, which is larger than anyone knew, said LinuxCare chief
technical officer Dave Sifry.”

“Linux could be the ultimate example of engineers winning over
managers, Sifry said. Because Linux is free, he said, it never
showed up on corporate budgets, giving engineers the freedom to
install it without waiting on a corporate decision-making
process.”
