TechWeb: Network Computer: The Next Generation

“The next-generation network computer (NC) will be unveiled
Monday. But will anyone care? Technology-savvy teachers may.
For now, the Linux-based $199 ($376 with 15-inch monitor and
shipping costs) “new Internet computer” is exclusively targeted at
the classroom.”

“At this time, the NIC can only be purchased for donation to a
school,” said an answer to a FAQ on the company’s website. “We are
offering a special price to the Help Us Help campaign of $376 for a
complete donation package.”

“The company appears to be positioning the NIC as an information
device, to be included among the 89 million information appliances
that International Data Corp., Framingham, Mass., expects will ship
in 2004. IDC predicts the info-appliance market will be worth $17.8
billion at that time.”
