“One of the main architects of the Windows 2000 launch event —
Jim Ewel, Microsoft general manager, Windows marketing — talked
with TechWeb Software editor Stuart Glascock about a number of key
issues related to the worldwide roll-out. Ewel also manages the
Microsoft team charged with combatting Linux, and he shed some
light on Microsoft’s view of the rapidly growing alternative
operating system.”
“On the Internet, if you look at the number of servers that run
the Net, many more servers run Windows NT today than run Linux.
There are lots of small sites out there that run Linux, lots of
one-page things that get no traffic, and that counts the same (in
surveys) as say Microsoft.com. In many ways, we think the absolute
number is not as interesting as how many of these sites are really
doing e-commerce. If you look at the top 10 busiest sites in
December, six of the 10 were running NT and SQL Server. None,
exactly zero, were running Linux.”
