“The alternative operating system made its first serious inroads
at Comdex two years ago. A group of Linux companies had gotten
together and rented floor space in the back corner of the basement
of the Sands Convention Center, away from the main show floor at
the Las Vegas Convention Center. It was a humble start, and
garnered little attention at the time.”

“While the Linux Business Expo is still marginalized – its still
not in the main convention area – it is much more visible now. Its
real estate at the Hilton allows for larger booths and is only a
short walk from the main floor….”

“But Torvalds admitted that Linux is still having a hard
time making inroads on the desktop. And, while he promised that
Linux will become more viable as an alternative operating system
for handheld devices, it will be some time before it is small
enough to fit on a cell phone.
