“AUSTRALIAN scientists claim to have developed satellite imaging
technology that can accurately predict droughts and wet seasons, as
well as agricultural capacity and areas threatened by fire.”

“The CSIRO has produced crystal-clear satellite images of
Australia using a sensor technology called Along Track Scanning
Radiometer (ATSR).”

“The software is based on the application-independent scripting
language Tcl/Tk, which offers the ability to add built-in commands
to manipulate file access.”

“Tcl/Tk places a patchwork of small, stretched satellite images
in a geographic co-ordinate system that is later attached to a
larger image measuring 5000 x 4000 pixels.”

“The software, built on a Sun Unix system, also runs on Linux
and Windows.”

“‘The good thing about the Tcl/Tk environment is its
cross-platform capabilities,’ Dr Turner said.”

“‘It also provides a GUI interface, which allows for consistency
across all platforms.”‘
