tilting toward the company that, like Cisco, tailors its technology
to the growth demands of its customer base.”

“At Cisco, we focused completely on building an infrastructure
that could scale with the exploding demand,” DeWitt says. “Once the
Internet came along, the developer community suddenly set its
sights on the mass market, asking the question, ‘How could we use
the Internet to deliver applications to the broad market?'”

“The answer always seemed to reside with the server, which
wasn’t developing as quickly as the network itself. What we set
out to do here at Cobalt was rewrite the whole server side of the
equation.
