“With KDE2 RC2 being used on thousands (maybe millions?) of
desktop systems right now, and the final KDE2 code being shipped to
packagers for release on the 22nd, I decided this would be a nice
time to write a review on it. This review is on KDE2 RC2, on a
RedHat 6.2 system. Note that this isn’t the final code, it’s about
a week different. So basically what I have is final.”
“I have been playing around with KDE2 CVS for the past 6 months
or so. I hate the KDE 1.x branch. It’s ugly, not that customizable,
felt horribly restraining, to begin the list of my complaints. I
switched to Gnome, and found myself to be in heaven. I eventually
began contributing to the Gnome project. While I was contributing,
KDE2 code was being forged. I then met a KDE fan from San Jose,
CA…Charles Samuels (Njaard or Njord online). He kept preaching
the KDE2 greats. How customizable it would be, how fast, stable,
and easy it would be. So eventually, I tried the CVS. It was okay.
I stayed with Gnome. KDE2 eventually hit beta. I tried it. I liked
it. As time went on, I slowly began to decide that I’d use KDE2 as
my main desktop when it was released. More time passed. KDE2
RC2 was released. I installed it as soon as it was on the FTPs as
RPM format. I installed it without really any problems. It loaded
quickly. The previous beta builds took 1 minute to load. The RC2
took about 10 seconds. Big difference. So things looked good.
I installed and setup kmail, I was impressed. Konqueror(refer to my
Konqy review for more information), is a great alternative to
Netscape. The UI is less restraining, and pretty. Customizable as
well. RC2 would be my next major desktop environment switch. It was
offering some truly great tools for stuff which Gnome had in
development at the time.”
