Will my program work on all Linux distributions?

“Even though the differences are slight they can pose
significant problems when a program is written to be run
universally on all Linux distributions. On some the file layout may
be slightly different. On other distributions there may be
different, incompatible library versions. There may not even be
required support programs in the distributions repository.

“Yet despite all of these problems you see pretty much the same
programs on all distributions. Not just open source programs,
closed source programs as well can be installed on many
distributions. There are several reasons for that.”
