Readers respond to an earlier article that speculated on
Microsoft opening the source code to Windows.

“While this strategy may help Microsoft, it will not benefit end
users. As a network administrator, I don’t know how many hours, if
not days, I’ve spent chasing down DLL files loaded on top of
another one with the same name, modified by some other software
company.”

“Open Source Software (OSS) is one of those nice ideas that can
turn out to be a real nightmare. It works for Linux because it’s in
limited usage, only a small community of developers work on the
source, and they’re mostly interested in the same thing-extending
Linux.”

“Mike Elgan is asking Microsoft to commit suicide to please its
competitors and the government. The reasons he states fail to
convince me of any rational reason for Microsoft to slit its own
throat.”
