“Microsoft has been awarded a patent that could give the
company control over important open standards used in the
construction of Web sites.”

“Web developers are concerned that the patent, awarded to
Redmond last month by the US Patent and Trademark Office, could
threaten the progress of related Web-site design standards.”

“The patent office should reexamine the patent, because we
believe they ignored a number of examples of prior art,” said
George Olsen, project leader for the Web Standards Project.
