YAHOO: CERN and Alteon Networks Collaborate on New Linux Gigabit Ethernet Drivers

Alteon Networks today announced the industry’s first Gigabit
Ethernet adapters with Jumbo Frame support for Linux computing
environments that can deliver up to 50 percent more data throughput
than competing products.

Initial Gigabit Ethernet performance tests with Jumbo Frames
conducted by CERN demonstrated a 250% performance increase in data
throughput, reaching a high of 720 Mbps compared to 224 Mbps using
standard 1500 byte Ethernet frames….

CERN and Alteon will release the new Linux driver under the GNU
Public License for it to be integrated as part of the standard
Linux kernel. It is planned to make the driver available in the
upcoming official 2.2 release of the standard Linux kernel….
