“Increasing use on the desktop will create a demand for the
server versions of this low-cost, low-maintenance environment. In
particular, Linux has become popular for Web-related software
development as companies move increasingly towards Internet
operations and reconfigure information systems for online
operation,” he said.

“Windows NT seems likely to maintain its dominance in Australian
servers, IDC says. In 1998, when the total number of servers
shipped rose 35 percent to more than 50,000 units, Windows NT
shipments climbed almost 80 percent to a 57 percent market
share.

“Unix server shipments rose 57 percent but accounted for only 15
percent of the market, according to IDC’s research.”
