“ZDNN recently reported that a new survey conducted at CAWorld
in New Orleans indicates the Linux platform is about to spread out
in some new directions.”
“The survey suggests that 49% of the first 2000 respondents see
Linux as an “important to essential” element of enterprise
computing. This is kicking CA’s (Computer Associates’) interest
because 30% of respondents are planning to use Linux in areas like
storage, security, and software delivery… areas in which CA make
the lion’s share of their profit.”
“Linux popularity is enough to interest Intel. InfoWorld reports
that the chip maker is planning an initiative to port the Linux OS
to their 64-bit architecture. Working with Linux developer V.A.
Systems, Intel also has Hewlett-Packard, Silicon Graphics, and
soon-to-join IBM onboard. According to InfoWorld, the “Trillian
Project,” as it is known (or Lintel, as certain wags would have
it), will make open-source code available by the beginning of the
year 2000.”
