ZDNet: Linux adds more heavyweight muscle

“Hewlett-Packard, unlike other Unix vendors, is throwing caution
to the wind and embracing Linux. It is encouraging the porting of
the open source code operating system to its Precision Architecture
Risc (PA-Risc) reduced instruction set computing servers, on the
grounds that the move won’t seriously undermine its HP-UX Unix.

“HP is providing technical support to the Puffin Group, a team
of open source code developers that wants to be known for
successfully porting Linux to PA-Risc, Caccamo said. HP already
offers support for Red Hat Software’s Linux on its Intel-based
NetServer product line.”

“Sun Microsystems officials haven’t yet commented on how they
see the Solaris operating system working alongside Linux servers
and workstations, but they have scheduled a luncheon at this week’s
LinuxWorld conference to announce their plans.”
