“Sure, 2.4 still isn’t here yet. But Linux developers have their
wish lists for the 2.5 kernel.”

“The Linux community may be eagerly awaiting the final release
of the 2.4 kernel, but it is already putting together a wish list
for the next major development kernel — version 2.5.”

“Once the 2.4 kernel is finalized and released, Linus Torvalds,
the “father” of Linux, and his team will create the 2.5 development
tree, beginning the cycle all over again. Patches and bug fixes for
the 2.4 kernel will continue to be released as 2.4.x versions.”

“The Linux development community is already looking ahead to
what development work should be considered in the future,” said
Sheila Harnett, a system architect at IBM’s Linux Technology Center
in Austin, Texas. “This varies in content from minor modifications
to major things like the incorporation of a journaling file system,
doing more work on Linux clusters and continued work on the
scheduler.”
