“This is the first in a series of looks at Office replacements.
The first is an Internet-based product called ThinkFree, available
for downloading from www.thinkfree.com. In fact, I’m writing this
review in ThinkFree Write, and so far it’s gone pretty well.”
“The entire ThinkFree Office suite is only about 10MB in
size and can be downloaded when you need it. Compare that to the
multiple CD-ROMs you need to install Office. ThinkFree obviously
sacrifices features for this compactness. I’ve noticed the
lack of a word-count feature, and I’m unable to send e-mail from
within the word processor. But I’ll get over it. You probably will,
too.”
“You may not get over the missing macros, however. Cheng notes
that Microsoft’s macros are platform-specific. Since ThinkFree is
designed to run on Windows, Macs, and Linux machines, the decision
was made to hold off on macros until his company can come up with a
cross-platform solution.”
