AS400Network: New Toolkit Gives iSeries OS/400 Developers More Options

“Big Blue will soon release a new toolkit that will give you new
ways to write and port code for the iSeries. ISeries Tools for
Developers will be available in the first quarter, so you won’t
have long to wait.”

“The toolkit contains 43 tools that can be called from
various OS/400 programming environments
, including command
line, Qshell, and the Portable Application Solutions Environment
(PASE). Many of the tools are based in Unix or X-windows, making
PASE and a client-based Xserver prerequisites. (Linux and AIX
clients include an Xserver; Windows clients will need a product
that emulates an Xserver
, such as Hummingbird Exceed or a
freeware alternative such as VNCviewer.)”

“A key feature of the iSeries Tools for Developers toolkit is
the Ez editor function (also called the Andrew Toolkit Editor,
named after Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon, since IBM developed
it in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University). Ez editor
lets developers edit code in a big, scrollable window instead of in
the smaller, 24-line green screens.”
