“Dell Computer Corp. will boost its backing of the Linux
operating system with the opening of a new “competency” center in
Round Rock. Dell decided to open the center because of Linux’s
rising share in a market previously dominated by Microsoft Corp.
and Bell Labs’ Unix operating system, says James Jech, global
alliance manager in Dell’s Enterprise Systems Group.”

“At Dell, “part of the labs that will produce white papers,
validated configurations, sizing tools and deployment guides will
be located on the Round Rock campus in the engineering labs,” Jech
says. “The other labs will contain customer proof-of-concept
capabilities. If they need to migrate to a Linux environment
running Oracle, we can help them facilitate and test those
conditions before they actually deploy them.”

“The new center is part of a Jan. 31 agreement between Dell and
Oracle Corp. Oracle will use Dell’s PowerEdge servers and
PowerVault storage systems as the Intel Corp.-based platform on
which Oracle will operate Linux.”
