Australian IT: Linux Hydra Puts Researchers Ahead

“South Australian researchers will no longer have to borrow or
buy high-performance computing power from other states, following
the installation of a powerful machine by the South Australian
Partnership for Advanced Computing (SAPAC).

“The 129-node Linux-based Hydra, housed at Adelaide University,
is relatively inexpensive at $1.74 million and was paid for by a
consortium of Adelaide’s three universities, the newly funded
Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics and an Australian
Research Council grant.

“A similar $1 million computer at the Victorian Partnership for
Advanced Computing (VPAC) sits beside a Unix machine that cost
almost five times as much…”
