“For the purpose of this article, I installed Red Hat 7.0 on an
IBM Netfinity 5100 with dual Xeon 900-MHz CPUs and 768 MBs of RAM,
as well as five disk drives of 18 GBs each under RAID. The server
came with two 100mbit NICs. Additionally, I installed a Phobos
Gigabit Ethernet NIC, connected to a Nbase Gigabit Switch.”
“Overall, even though reports about Red Hat 7.0 problems
abound, I remained very impressed of these results.
Especially, considering a Red Hat 6.0 test similar to this (but not
identical to it) created a kernel panic after only 40 minutes into
the test.”
“My recommendation is that if you don’t do any development
on your server, you are safe to go with Red Hat 7.0, applying the
changes I detailed above. If you need to do development, wait for
7.1 and use 6.2 instead. If you need the added bonus of the
Red Hat 7.0 Professional Server distribution — with the dozens of
additional software packages (DB2 is only one example) then there
is no going back to previous Red Hat versions.”
