CNET Asia: Taiwan, China in Supercomputer Race

“A Taiwan research center and U.S. chipmaker Intel have teamed
to build the country’s fastest supercomputer that will rank among
the 20 most powerful in the world.

“The government-run National Center for High Performance
Computing’s (NCHC) recently deployed computer is based on 128 Intel
Itanium 2 and 280 Intel Xeon processors, delivering a total compute
capability of around 3 teraflops, or 3 trillion calculations per
second.

“Previously, the county’s most powerful machine was the NCHC’s
IBM pSeries 690 Turbo, featuring 256 of IBM’s own processors. At
around 1 teraflop, it is ranked at 93 in the Top 500 supercomputer
list. The new computer should reside within list’s top 20…”
