supercluster based on [the] production Linux operating system,”
Gilfeather says. Comprising 64-nodes, each with 128 Intel 450 MHz
Pentium II processors, and interconnected via a Myrinet network,
the solution, dubbed ‘Roadrunner’ by the HPCERC and partners Intel
and Alta Technology Corporation, demonstrated the viability of
building an inexpensive, high-performance, application processing
supercluster using the open source operating system and commodity
hardware.”

traditional, high-performance computing applications and emerging
national information infrastructure applications, such as scalable
Web serving, interactive visualization/data exploration,
information serving and data mining. Today, the system in an
integral part of the National Science Foundation’s National
Technology Grid – a national-scale prototype of 21st century
technology infrastructure, overseen by NSF and developed by a
50-member National Compu-tational Science Alliance.”
