“IBM’s longtime development strategy for its Power chips has
been to build them in a way that enables users to get the most out
of software–be it home-grown or third-party.

“The new version of IBM’s 64-bit processor will be no different,
said Mark Papermaster, director of microprocessor design for IBM’s
Systems Group, in Austin, Texas…

“Furthermore, the Power5–which will run at speeds faster than
1.5GHz, although officials have yet to give an exact
frequency–will continue to enable users to run 32-bit or 64-bit
applications on IBM’s AIX operating system or on Linux, even
