A reader pointed out that one of our sister sites, Hardware
Central, posted an article that included some musings on the future
on Linux and other operating systems now that Intel has released
the Itanium 64-bit processor, and how shoppers will approach the
impending confusion in the hardware market. Here’s what Eric
Grevstad had to say about Linux:

“And a whole high-tech industry (well, would-be
industry) that’s built on low-priced or free product — desktop
Linux — is floundering. Ballyhooed software developer Eazel is
belly-up. Corel and Caldera have fled the field. Last week, my
favorite, friendly-enough-for-Windows-users distributor,
MandrakeSoft, dumped its CEO, CIO, CTO, and numerous other staffers
amid dire financial gossip, though vowing to keep together the team
behind the nifty Linux-Mandrake 8.0….”

“What’s the difference between a Mac zealot and a Linux
zealot? Both say, ‘Thou shalt have no other god before mine,’ but
one gladly throws his whole wallet into the collection plate and
the other refuses to put in a penny.”
