“Today, Hewlett-Packard releases its toolkit for developers
looking to run Linux applications on the next generation Intel
Architecture 64-bit Itanium processor.”

“The toolkit includes an IA-64 simulator that lets
developers use their existing 32-bit systems, such as Pentium II
and III workstations, to test drive their IA-64 applications for
Linux.
The early availability of the tool kit is meant to
encourage IA-64 applications. “Any programmer who wishes to may
become an IA-64 developer” with the simulator rather than early
availability being limited to narrow band of cooperating companies,
as has sometimes been the case in the past, said Jason Maxman,
Intel’s IA-64 marketing manager.”
