“IBM will launch its first new mainframe in nearly two years, a
32-bit machine targeted at a select group of new and existing
high-end customers.

“The highly-anticipated zSeries z990 server, known to the
computing world as T-Rex, will be unveiled at a launch event in San
Francisco Tuesday, according to Illuminata Senior Analyst Gordon
Haff. However, IBM spokespersons have refused to comment, leaving
the details to be filled in by myriad analysts who realize the cat
has long ago been let out of the bag.

“As previously reported, one oft-repeated kernel of note is that
the z990 features much more power than the previous 16-bit z900
mainframe. It is expected to scale to 450 million instructions each
second, or a third more than the z900. In addition to Linux, The
z990 also will run Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), version 1.3
and support the Web services standards included in J2EE 1.4, such
as UDDI and SOAP. 64-bit versions will appear by 2004…”
