“According to a NetworkWorldFusion News article, the Santa Cruz
Operation will announce plans this week for their own distribution
of Linux. This is to be their “low end” offering with SCO Unix
their “high end” operating system.”
“Rationalizations aside, this is an admission that Linux is
rapidly invading their turf and, as this trend continues, will push
SCO into an ever shrinking market niche. Unlike the major Unix
vendors, SCO doesn’t sell the hardware that runs their operating
systems. That has enabled the creation of a lucrative value-added
reseller (VAR) market to build the machines, install and configure
the SCO OS, and add their own turn-key applications. These systems
are targeted at the automation of small businesses, which typically
require a lot of consultation. By letting these resellers have the
hardware and service business, SCO has built up an allied army of
motivated salesmen and a service organization that dwarfs their own
company.”
