“Certified by Linuxcare Labs” Indicates Tested, Vendor-Neutral
Compliance with Linux Technology
AUGUST 12, 1999
SAN FRANCISCO, Linuxcare, Inc., the first company to offer
comprehensive Linux technical services to the Global 1000,
announced today that selected products from American Power
Conversion (APC) had been awarded Linuxcare Labs Certification
status. In addition, Linuxcare Labs, the product certification arm
of Linuxcare, entered into an agreement with Macmillan Computer
Publishing to provide technical editing and certification services
for Macmillan’s Linux books.
“Linuxcare Labs is the only place on the planet that offers true
vendor-neutral Linux certification,” said David Sifry, CTO of
Linuxcare. “We’ve been very pleased at the response we’ve gotten
from leading vendors who see Linuxcare Lab’s unique role in
ensuring that their customers have the best possible experience
using Linux.”
Linuxcare Labs adheres to a testing methodology that contributes
to the open standards effort in the Linux community. With a
strictly vendor-neutral approach, Linuxcare Labs helps prevent
fragmentation of the Linux platform while fostering the continued
development of the operating system. Linuxcare Labs has certified
selected systems from Dell Computer, Compaq Computer, and PFU
(Panasonic-Fujitsu-Uchida) and has received accolades from Linux
vendors including Caldera Systems, SuSE and TurboLinux for its
fair, open, and authoritative certification program.
Linuxcare Labs Certified Power Management Systems
Linuxcare Labs has successfully completed certification testing
for models of the award-winning APC Smart UPSÒ
(uninterruptible power supply) for distributed servers and
networks; and Back-UPS ProÒ, which offers smart battery
backup and high performance surge suppression for workstations.
Certified models include the Smart-UPS 620, Smart-UPS 700 and
Back-UPS Pro 650.
In addition, Linuxcare certified PowerChuteÒ plus UPS
power management software for Linux. The software gracefully shuts
down Linux servers during extended power outages, sends power
alerts to network administrators, and offers other advanced power
management features. PowerChute plus for Linux is scheduled to be
available at the end of Q3 1999. “Linuxcare Labs is a one-stop-shop
for Linux technology certification,” said Ted Ives, UPS Product
Manager at APC. “Like Linuxcare, our business is focused on
offering our customers the peace of mind that comes from knowing
their technology will keep working. APC is proud to be the first
vendor of advanced power management solutions to be certified by
Linuxcare Labs.”
Linuxcare Labs Certified Books
Linuxcare has entered into a comprehensive agreement with
Macmillan Computer Publishing (Macmillan) to provide technical
review and certification services for Linux books published under
the Que and Sams imprints. Macmillan is the world’s largest
computer book publisher and has staked out a leadership position in
the Linux market. Macmillan recently published The Complete Linux
Operating System 6.0 featuring Linux-Mandrake, an enhanced version
of Red Hat Linux.
Under the agreement, Linuxcare Labs will provide technical
review of Macmillan publications, proofing pages for technical
accuracy and completeness. Linuxcare Labs certification services
will involve a thorough testing of concepts, exercises, examples
and other technical references in the manuscripts to ensure full
compliance with Linux technology. The agreement spans 13 books over
the next year.
“Macmillan USA is very excited to be working with Linuxcare to
ensure the technical accuracy and usability of our Linux books,”
said Michael Stephens, Associate Publisher, Sams Publishing, a
Macmillan USA imprint. “The wealth of technical knowledge and
practical experience represented by Linuxcare Labs is simply
astounding and can’t help but make Macmillan’s Linux books
stronger. We view Linuxcare as a valuable partner and are actively
looking for other ways we can work together to better serve the
Linux community through our books, software products, and support
services.”
