“In the course of my work I am often asked about Open Source
Software and how it fits in to the IT landscape. People are puzzled
by it’s economics and social effects. I won’t dwell here on
definitions; most people that I speak to are less concerned about
licence terms and more interested in understanding the forces at
work.

“For the purposes of this discussion we will only be considering
Free or Open Source Software that is published under the General
Public License or a license that has similar properties. I tend to
use the terms ‘Free’ and ‘Open Source’ interchangably…”
