“How far things have come. Since I reviewed the Linux storage
infrastructure two years ago, it’s rarely necessary anymore to
mention that Linux supports IDE, SCSI and fibre channel from nearly
every major vendor worldwide.

“And unlike two years ago, Linux based configuration utilities
for hardware RAID cards and external arrays are now easy to find,
and fibre channel switch vendors like Brocade even support their
hardware in failover Linux clusters, such as those from HP.

“The last two years have seen the price per megabyte of Linux
storage plummet nearly 60% to under US$10,000 per terabyte. Yes,
these days, Linux installations easily go into multi-terabyte
territory. But large installations of cheap storage devices have
also shown Linux limitations on objects larger than two terabytes
in volume managers, filesystems, SCSI drivers, and elsewhere;
installations in the tens of terabytes are feasible only with very
careful planning. Keep this pervasive caveat in mind as you read
this survey of the current state of Linux storage
