“Linux, the open source operating system expected to play a
major role in the upcoming IA-64 computing environment, is getting
an added “push” from Hewlett Packard and Intel Corp. by way of the
IA-64 Developer’s Kit for Linux, which the two companies recently
announced.”
“The IA-64 Developer’s Kit for Linux is said to enable the
growing community of Linux developers to “develop, test, debug and
run” IA-64 applications for the upcoming Itanium processor from
chip giant Intel.“
“The kit, according to HP and Intel officials, is unique because
it contains an IA-64 Linux “simulator,” developed by HP, allowing
developers to use IA-32 systems to “emulate” the functionality of a
64-bit Linux environment. A complementary documentation and links
to software libraries, created by Intel, is also included in the
kit.”
“The broad availability of Linux applications is an important
characteristic of HP’s Itanium processor-based server and
workstation environment,” said Ganesh Ayyar, director of marketing
for HP Asia Pacific.”
