“Grid computing in Linux environments is a hot topic at the
Enterprise Linux Forum Conference & Expo this week. Several
conference presentations focus on developments in open-source
standards for grid computing and the major vendors’ grid computing
initiatives. But all this attention to grid computing doesn’t mean
that all mainstream businesses should jump on the bandwagon–at
least not yet, according to Chris Smith, a speaker at the
conference and an integration architect for Platform Computing, a
vendor that has already implemented grid solutions at major
manufacturing, pharmaceutical and scientific companies…“In the past, grid computing has been used primarily in
high-performance computational computing. Is it applicable to
mainstream businesses today?“Smith: It’s applicable. Most companies today
seem to be struggling with the notion of wanting to grow their
infrastructure without just buying hardware. This is driven by
budgetary and management constraints; they just have too much stuff
out there already. The promise of grid technology is that it will
help companies consolidate and virtualize environments so that
they’ll be able to do more with less…”
