“As e-businesses rely on server farm technology to ensure
reliability of applications ranging from basic Web serving and
messaging to payment and transaction processing, managing those
servers becomes more complex with every new server an administrator
adds. Coming to the aid of beleaguered IT managers is Microsoft
(stock: MSFT), which is developing software that allows monitoring
of Windows 2000 servers and apps from a common console.”
“Similarly, Caldera Systems (stock: CALD) last week released
Volution, management software that provides similar functionality
for Linux systems. …Caldera’s Volution keeps track of what
software packages are located on systems, and can monitor remaining
resources and alert administrators when there’s a problem. The
software also monitors the hardware configuration of a system.”
“Integrated management tools are especially needed for
Linux, said Gartner Group analyst George Weiss. “IT managers don’t
believe that Linux has sufficient management tools to deploy on a
wide-scale basis,” he said.”
