ZDNet: AMD swings its 64-bit ‘SledgeHammer’

“AMD Thursday released to developers the first peek at the
design of its next-generation 64-bit processor technology,
code-named SledgeHammer. The company made available to software
developers design guidelines for SledgeHammer software.”

“As part of its attempt to build software support, AMD has
begun working with the open-source community to help tune Linux to
run on SledgeHammer. The company, for example, briefed Linux guru
Linus Torvalds on its plans.”

“We are working with a lot of the (figures) in the open-source
community,” Mitton said. “We’ve informed (Torvalds) on what’s going
on.”
